For the Type D (long-stay) Student Visa and residence permit, you need to prove sufficient financial means — typically €920 per month (based on 2026 minimum wage; often shown as €11,040+ for one year or the full study duration), plus tuition fees and accommodation proof.

Proof via bank statements, scholarship letter, or sponsor documents. Health insurance (minimum €30,000 coverage) is also required. Exact requirements are assessed during the visa process — always verify with the Portuguese consulate or university.

Part-Time job earning

International students on a D4 student visa can work up to 20 hours per week during the academic term (full-time during holidays, subject to rules).

  • Minimum wage (2026): Around €920 per month for full-time.

English-speaking opportunities exist, especially in tourist areas and international companies.

Time Duration For Post-Study Work Visa

After graduation, graduates can apply for a job-seeking or entrepreneurship residence permit allowing them to stay for up to 12 months to search for a job or start a business related to their field. You can work full-time during this period. Some options also include a shorter 4-month job seeker visa. Once employed, you can switch to a work residence permit.

PR Process Time Duration

Permanent residency generally requires 5 years of continuous legal residence in Portugal. Study time may count partially; time on work permits after studies helps accumulate the required period.

  • Additional requirements: Stable income, clean record, basic integration (sometimes Portuguese language/civic knowledge).
  • Processing: Several weeks to months via AIMA (Immigration and Borders Service).

After PR, citizenship is possible with further requirements (usually after 5 years total legal residence). Rules can change — always check official sources like vistos.mne.gov.pt or AIMA.
