The Netherlands is highly attractive for Indian students due to its **English-taught programs**, innovative teaching methods (problem-based learning), strong research focus, and excellent employability. Key advantages include:
It is a popular choice for fields like engineering, business, IT, sustainability, and social sciences.
The Huygens Scholarships Programme (HSP) is aimed at talented students who want to come to the Netherlands in the final phase of their Bachelor’s studies or during their Master’s studies. Study in the Netherlands can include research and/or practical training. However, HSP scholarships cannot be awarded to finance PhD studies in the Netherlands. Part of the total budget is reserved for students following programmes in Dutch studies. The HSP programme is administered by Nuffic (see below). Indian students may be eligible to study in Holland and Netherlands Fellowship Programme (NFP). Individual universities in Holland also provide their own scholarships for international students, including students from India. These include the Leiden University Excellence Scholarships, the Maastricht University High Potential Scholarships, Radboud Scholarship Programme, the University of Twente Scholarships, and the University of Groningen Talent Grant.
Tuition fees for non-EU students (including Indians) in English-taught programs typically range from €8,000 to €21,500 per year (average €9,000–€18,000 for most Bachelor’s and Master’s).
Breakdown (approximate):
For the student residence permit, you must prove sufficient funds for living expenses: approximately €1,094–€1,131 per month (around €13,000–€13,600 for 12 months as of 2026; exact study norm updated annually).
This is in addition to tuition fees. Proof can be via bank statements, blocked account, scholarship letter, or sponsor documents. The university often applies for the MVV (entry visa) + residence permit together. Always confirm the latest amount with your university or IND.nl.
International students can work up to 16 hours per week during the academic term or full-time during official holidays (June–August). A separate work permit (TWV) may be needed in some cases.
Higher-paying student jobs exist in tech or logistics. Net pay is lower after taxes. English-speaking opportunities are common.
After graduation, you can apply for the Orientation Year residence permit — a 1-year permit to search for a job or start a business. You can work full-time during this period without restrictions. It must be applied for within 3 years of graduation. Once you find a suitable job, you can switch to a Highly Skilled Migrant permit or EU Blue Card.
Permanent residency generally requires 5 years of continuous legal residence. Study time usually does not fully count; time spent on work permits helps accumulate qualifying years.
